Service at Thornton Friends Upper School

Quakers believe that there is the light of God in everyone; therefore, each individual has worth and deserves respect.  Our community service program is both an outward expression of this belief and an expression of a faith in the power of love and non-violence to bring about change.

(The formal Community Service Program for the 2007-2008 academic year is now complete. All students need to ensure that their site has the proper paperwork to respond to the school and to verify all hours spent at the site. Without this, you cannot earn credit for you service!)

The Community Service Program's Purpose

The Thornton Friends School Community Service Program:

  • gives students an avenue for learning about themselves through contact with others which is not available in the classroom, in the arts, or on the playing field;
  • gives further opportunity to develop responsibility and maturity;
  • provides experiences to heighten the awareness of social issues;
  • helps instill a lifelong appreciation for the value of a caring community and the practice of community service;
  • helps students see that each of us can make a difference in the world.

Consequently, on Wednesday mornings during the fall semester, rather than coming to Thornton, students report directly to a community organization with which they have made plans to volunteer their services.

General Community Service Guidelines
