Alexandra Bell is treasurer of Thornton's board. She is a member of Bethesda Friends Meeting. She has been involved in Friends Education since 1985. Currently, she is Director of Finance and Operations at Friends Meeting School in Frederick County, MD. She is excited about supporting Thornton at this crucial time in its development.
Bruce Campbell is the parent of a Silver Spring Upper School alumna. His child also attended the Middle School for one year. He and his wife Karen are entering their sixth year as members of the Thornton Community. Bruce is educated as an engineer and currently works in the energy industry on electricity deregulation issues. He hopes that his experience and training as a manager in a large company and as a board member in several industry organizations will be of value on the Thornton Board. Bruce is in his second year on the board.
Kathy Russo is the parent of Trevor Corning, a 2007 Thornton Friends graduate. Kathy is a long time resident of DC, having earned her B.S. from the American University in 1976 and her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1979. Since graduation from law school, she has been in private practice in DC and has represented private sector and government clients in connection with complex transactional matters, such as mergers, acquisitions and financings, as well as commercial contract negotiation and dispute resolution. Kathy hopes that her experience will assist Thornton in navigating an exciting and challenging time in the School’s history.
Ann Murphy is beginning her twenty-fourth year as an English teacher. In 1966, she graduated with an MAT from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and worked for a variety of public and private schools. After devoting eleven years to her three children, she spent the next thirteen years teaching at Sandy Spring Friends School, from which her son, Peter Heyneman, graduated in 1995. Her daughter, Julie Heyneman, who entered Thornton as a middle school student and graduated in 2004, is in her third year in the Friends World Program. Ann is grateful for the many opportunities Quaker education has offered to her and to her family. Serving in her second year as a board member allows her to give back to the community.
Michael DeHart is in his 9th year as Thornton's Head of School and has been with the school in some capacity for 16 years. He has been an educator since 1978, including 10 years at Sandy Spring Friends School. Michael earned an Masters in Social Work from Catholic University in 1994. His son, Jonathan, is an 10th grader at Stuart High School in Falls Church. Michael brings an unabashed optimism and love of young people, their families and their teachers to his work. He is grateful to all who serve Thornton, particularly its teachers and its board members. In addition to loving his work, he loves cooking people breakfast, especially waffles and blueberry pancakes
John Gannon is the parent of TFS alumnus Evan Gannon [06'], who spent an internship year at Dynamy in Worcester, Massachusetts and is enrolled at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts. John retired from the Montgomery County Public School system after 36 years of being an educator with experience in teaching, school system administration, Human Resources, and training and development. After retiring, John became an independent consultant specializing in leadership development, facilitation and change agent projects. He was one of the founding parents of the TFS parent organization in 2005. His wife, Barbara Saragovitz, loves the Thornton community and both look forward to being active in the life and development of TFS. This is John's second year on the board and first as Clerk.
Dave Burgevin is the parent of two Sandy Spring Friends School children (US and LS) and a member of Sandy Spring Friends Meeting. Dave is educated as a museum professional and a photographer. He has worked the past twenty years for private, university, state, and federal museums, primarily in archives and collections management. He hopes that his background and education will be of value to the Thornton Friends School Board.
Liz Davenport (a new TFS Board member) and her husband, Bill Wolf, have two children: Anna (TFS alumnus '07 now at Beloit College) and Greta (TFS Grade 8). Liz is a senior program analyst at NOAA's National Ocean Service with a master's degree from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Her career spans 25 years of public service in environmental policy, communications, strategic planning, and performance management. Liz has witnessed her children thriving under the TFS model for educating the "whole" child (achievement in academics and service to community, environment, and peace). She believes this model is right for our times and looks forward to advancing it through Board service.
Ted Quinn has no biography at the moment. We're sure he has one somewhere though.
Bob Mauer is the parent of an Upper School student. He has been in a variety of financial and management positions over the last 32 years and is currently the CFO of a company based in Vienna Virginia. Bob and his wife Amy have been active in volunteer work in school systems in Ohio, England and Maryland. They have another child who is grown. Bob is looking forward to assist in providing support to the same Thornton community that has given his son a great academic and social background.
Brian Carroll has been an attender at several Quaker meetings over the past dozen years. He originally hails from New Hampshire, and is a graduate of Bates College and the University of Maryland. Brian has worked as a preservation carpenter on historic buildings in New England and the Washington DC region. He currently works as an architect for GTM Architects in Bethesda Maryland. Brian lives with his wife Brooke and their two children ages 6 and 8 in Gaithersburg MD. He hopes that his lifelong love of education and passion for the built environment can prove to be an asset to the Thornton community.
