Note: Klingenstein is affiliated with Columbia University and is a wealth of information.  Friends Council provides general information about Quaker schools and education.  David Mallery has worked with Thornton in the past and has some good resources as well. The other sites have interesting potential as they seek to address all kinds of needs: community building through chat rooms, listservs and bulletin boards, job searches, lesson plans, libraries of useful teaching documents, calendars of events, links, etc.

The National Geographic website has materials for teachers, including grant opportunities.

Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution website includes links to the educational departments of every museum in the institution and a searchable database of educational resources.

Washington Post

The Washington Post online education pages, which include articles of relevance to teachers as well as some useful links.

PBS

A searchable database of PBS materials for use in education.

 

 

Learning Styles and Differences

LD OnLine

Definitely the best site on the web for all kinds of information about learning disabilities and for ideas about teaching students who have them.

All Kinds of  Minds

This site focuses on differences in learning styles and represents the organization behind the recent video "Developing Minds" as well as "Schools Attuned," a well-regarded summer training program for teachers.

Wrightslaw

This is a great site for information about the law as it concerns education for the learning disabled.

Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS)

Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW)

National Education Association (NEA)

American Federation of Teachers (AFT)

Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC)

Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)

Schools of California Online Resources for Education (SCORE)

AIMS and AISGW are the two major regional associations of independent schools.  NEA and AFT are the two major teachers' unions.  ERIC is divided up into clearinghouses on different topics and contains over 1 million articles about education, some can be read full-text, others must be ordered.  ASCD has more about conferences, professional development, etc. SCORE is a research resource for teachers of history and social studies which organizes and rates web links on hundreds of topics in Social Studies.

Fellowships/Grants

The Fulbright Program

There are several excellent fellowships available for international study, travel and professional development through the Fulbright program.

National Endowment for the Humanities

Each year the NEH offers teachers paid opportunities to study humanities topics in a variety of Summer Seminars and Institutes around the country (and a couple abroad).

Klingenstein Summer Institute

This is a two-week, summer fellowship program targeting beginning teachers (2-5 years) for seminars in educational practice and philosophy.

NEA Foundation

The NEA Foundation explicitly states that it supports public school teachers, but it may be worth exploring.

 

 

Information About Quakerism

The Religious Society of Friends

A website of links to all things Quaker.  You can find publications, history, historical writings, Quaker organizations, Quaker-run businesses, you name it.

Quaker Information Center

Similar to the website above but more limited in scope, includes some great service opportunities.

Baltimore Yearly Meeting

The organizing body for Friends Meetings in the area, includes information about programs and meetings.

 

 

Critical Friends Group (CFG) and Related

          Coalition of Essential Schools (CES)

The reform effort that is closely allied with CFG's, the CES resource page has a number of excellent articles and ideas about student-centered teaching and school reform.

          National School Reform Faculty

This is the group that was born with the beginning of the critical friends group idea in 1995.  This site includes information about training and other resources as well as national events.

          Relearning by Design

Formerly CLASS, this organization founded by Grant Wiggins focuses on the assessment end of school reform and provides training, resources, consulting, etc.
